Protecting the environment and advancing sustainability go hand in hand with our mission of improving and saving lives with diagnostics. From products to packaging, we work to incorporate environmental improvements that reduce waste, provide a greener alternative and/or help eliminate water consumption.
We believe these cornerstones contribute to fulfilling the expectations of our stakeholders and creating value for us and our stockholders.
Spanning 130+ countries, our strong, multinational organization is comprised of unique ethnicities, cultures, heritages, experiences and abilities. This enables diverse perspectives to drive more creative and innovative ideas and results. We recruit and develop employees from diverse backgrounds and cultures to fulfill our mission and deliver upon our commitment to customer excellence around the globe, ultimately ensuring patients receive exceptional care no matter where they are.
From 2014 through 2021, we reduced water consumption by more than 20 million gallons of water (16%) while increasing our manufacturing volume by an estimated 29%1. On average, 170,000 liters of water per year are saved with one Vitros® System. Using our patented dry slide technology, along with our systems — which require neither water nor drains to operate — we are industry leaders in environmental efficiency and water conservation.

Imagine the time, money and headaches you will save when you remove the need for a water purification system, plumbing and waste drain line. All of our Vitros systems don’t require an external water source, so they can be placed anywhere with a power source. This will boost your lab’s efficiency, reduce costs and improve your ability to deliver quality diagnostic results to improve patient care.
We take waste and hazardous materials compliance seriously and use an environmental health and safety (EHS) management system approach to compliance, continuous improvement and environmental commitment. We continuously seek more sustainable disposal methods to reduce overall waste at our facilities.
We generate clean energy at our global facilities and incorporate environmentally friendly practices into our product manufacturing and packaging. We never stop assessing our global environmental impact and carbon footprint across our full supply chain, and we continue to find ways to help our customers create a more sustainable and eco-friendly world.
This first sustainability report covers Ortho’s approach to sustainability, corporate responsibility and our global progress on environmental, social and governance (ESG) topics during fiscal year 2021.
